Billingsmoor farm, Butterleigh, Devon.

The farm and surroundings
Billingsmoor farm is a 320-acre organic dairy farm situated in Mid Devon, also known as Devonshire's Heartland. Although only a short drive from junction 28 of the M5 you will be struck by the peace and tranquillity of the area the moment you arrive at Billingsmoor. At over 700 ft above sea level the views are breathtaking. You can enjoy Devon, exploring the area's beautiful hills and valleys, or stretching your wings to visit Exmoor and Dartmoor National parks, or the ever popular north and south Devon coasts. The beautiful quaint seaside towns of Exmouth, Seaton and Sidmouth with its famous donkey sanctuary are only a 30 min. drive to the south, and the rugged north coast with its beautiful villages of Croyde Bay and Coombe Martin are only a 45 min. drive to the North. We also have both Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks within a 30-minute drive. The Exmoor Coastal Heaths have been recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the diversity of plant species present. The scenery of rocky headlands, ravines, waterfalls and towering cliffs gained the Exmoor coast recognition as a heritage coast in 1991. This dramatic coastline is an adventure playground for climbers and explorers, with its with huge waterfalls and caves. The cliffs provide one of the longest and most isolated seacliff traverses in the UK.

Closer to home we have the National Trust properties of Killerton and Knightshayes Court both within 10 miles of us. We have also got the beautiful city of Exeter with its magnificent cathedral close by. The lovely village of Bickleigh is only 4 miles away with its railway museum, chocolate box thatched cottages and the 14th century bridge rumoured to be the inspiration behind the Simon and Garfunkle song ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’. There is also a vineyard at Bickleigh where you can visit and taste the wonderful wines that are produced there. Visit Tiverton, the largest town in mid Devon, for echoes of the past including a romantic castle and horse-drawn barge trips (one of only 5 left in the country) on the idyllic Grand Western canal. Occupying a strategic position on two rivers, the Exe and the Lowman, brought Tiverton wealth as a flourishing textile town, resulting in many fine buildings.

Part of the Duchy estate
Billingsmoor farm in Butterleigh is a traditional organic dairy farm and is part of the Bradninch estate, which forms part of the Prince of Wales Duchy of Cornwall estate. The Duchy of Cornwall and Prince Charles are well known for supporting both farming and the conservation of the countryside. Edward III created the Duchy estate in 1337 for his son and heir, Prince Edward, and its primary function was to provide him and the future Princess of Wales with an income from its assets. A charter ruled that each future Duke of Cornwall would be the eldest surviving son of the Monarch and the heir to the throne. The current Duke of Cornwall, HRH The Prince of Wales, is actively involved in running the Duchy and his philosophy is to improve the estate and pass it on to future Dukes in a stronger and better condition.

The farming at Billingsmoor farm
We milk 140 organic British Friesian cows on 320 acres of organic grass and woodland. We run a year round breeding programme which means there are always new born calves on the farm. On Billingsmoor we also grow crops that are harvested and fed to the cows during the winter months.

The Billingsmoor family
Robert and Jayne Lammie and our three sons Jack, Alex and Edward, the Collie dog called Lilly and Spaniel called Megan run the farm. We started farming here eleven years ago and one of the sons hopes that he will become the second generation to farm here. We are proud of our animals, farm and the countryside and like to pass our knowledge and experience on to our guests.

The location of the Feather Down tents
The tents are sited in a field overlooking woodland and are perfectly placed to enjoy the unlimited views over the surrounding rolling countryside. Children will enjoy playing in the fields and woodland, discovering nature and building their own dens!

You could even hire one of our chickens arks and have your very own chickens to look after during your stay at the farm.

Pets allowed
Pets are welcome, but please keep them under close control near livestock.
